- Living in an intensifying technological and digital environment causes people to interact more with smartphones and related internet platforms. Although the advantages and disadvantages of modern smartphone use are widely discussed, the fact that it also affects cross-cultural activities is a global phenomenon that is mostly discussed in the context of cultural and technology relations. Focusing on one of the modern factors affecting human behavior (i.e. smartphone use), this study develops the Multidimensional Smartphone Use Scale and tests the factor structure of this scale to present a scale covering smartphone-related problems. Using an online survey, a total of 514 participants participated in the current study. The scale was developed to measure a multidimensional understanding of problems and behavioral disorders associated with smartphone use, such as nomophobia, ringing, textuality, and phubbing, supported by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The scale demonstrated good internal consistency reliability, ranging from α = .75 to α = .89. This article presents preliminary evidence for the reliability and validity of the Multidimensional Smartphone Use Scale, which can be used in a wide variety of settings to measure maladaptive forms of smartphone use and related behaviors.
