- One of our department professors, Assoc. Prof. Azize Aslıhan Nişancı conducted a study with her colleagues that was published in Languages journal.
- In the context of this study, the impact of parents' language attitudes among Turkish immigrants on their motivation to promote the preservation of heritage languages in their children was examined. It is also aimed to explore the strategies used to preserve heritage languages. For this purpose, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 parents (16 mothers and 4 fathers), each interview lasting approximately 15-20 minutes. Interviews conducted individually and in Turkish by the first author and later translated into English revealed a general spectrum of parental language attitudes, which in turn influenced their motivation to maintain the heritage language. It has been observed that differences in this motivation arise from a variety of factors, such as home and community environments, parents' acculturation experiences, perceptions of the relationship between culture and language, and the perceived advantages of bilingualism in terms of children's cognitive development. However, despite different motivations, all parents expressed their desire to preserve their heritage languages, leading to the implementation of various Heritage Language Management Strategies. Providing important information for the heritage language field and family language policy, this study contributes significantly to the understanding of how parental attitudes shape efforts to preserve the heritage language in families.
